LA Rope at Threshold: Shunga and Erotic Kinbaku

June 2, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

This class will begin with a display and discussion of several pieces of shunga, or Japanese erotic art, from Zetsu’s personal collection.  Shunga is a traditional form of erotic art in Japan featuring sexual imagery and content and was practiced by most of the great Japanese artists of the 18th and 19th centuries.  The word shunga means “spring” and connotes eroticism and sexuality in Japanese culture.  Seen as an underground form of art, and subject to heavy censorship, these pieces were often unsigned, but the style and technique of the artists make them easy to attribute.  From Hiorshige and Hokusai to Yoshitoshi, these artists all worked in this secretive and forbidden art.

The second half of the class will explore how the eroticism of shunga has influenced modern kinbaku and we will explore three ties that are designed to maximize eroticism and create a sexualized headspace.
